"Bowsprit" is assembled, big hatch is made, mast support is made and assembled, rudder and centerboard will be ready soon. Small details take a lot of time, today I tried to make a glassfibre tube for rudder.

Interior

017- emergency compartment is built in.

018- anchor well is built and preassembled.

Cockpit Lockers

deciding how to organize the cockpit lockers for practicality (sizes) and max weight reduction (min material). The emergency compartment is next with two hatches - one from cockpit side, another from hull side, (for accessing when capsized!).

Moving forward again... beam mounts

Finally we have things moving forward again, however Toivo is currently dealing with the challenges re setting up the beam mounts.

Sheet 20- it is not easy to cut the slots, because the drawing is flat, while the hull is curved. Beam bulkhead trim- the drawing shows "arms" left in the middle of the cut away area. No dimensions, and it is hard to mark, using beam mount. What radius to use?

hmmm, no action on the boat now for two weeks, this is very frustrating to both Toivo and myself. It just shows how exposed we are to the black magic of the international banking system, which seems to have even its internal experts in disarray. And I'm not talking about the current global financial crisis... I'm talking about a simple transfer of funds from one bank to another within Europe. Hopefully on Monday this will be solved and we can breathe again..... and order the next batch of materials !

working on main hull details

Things are moving forward on various details of the main hull now, fitting the bow eye for the bow pole, and fitting the various panels into the interior of the cabin - forward bunk, cabin settee's and their integration with the rotating centreboard, etc.

next will be the bow web, and now that the beam mounts have turned up, this will be the next major task to start on.

time is a precious resource - ordering parts

time is also a resourse, and You know, when it is wasted, it is gone, forever...

I had just a problem with trying to order the mast support, nobody was interested in manufacturing this piece in alu. And heavy,thick plexi hatches with alu frames were agreed by drawings. If anybody is interested, I can order more... just let me know

Right Side Up

Windows and hatches have been cut for air to work inside.

Waiting to finish the rudder and daggerboard, because the third! shipment of carbon cloth for my supplier is lost on the way from germany to estonia by DHL!

Also need to make some supports for trailer, to be done like Lloyd Crisp`s boat in Australia.

Eventually windows will be made from a single piece of dark tinted plexi. My feeling is confirmed now having looked at the first F-22's launched (two windows is just too fussy for the lines of a small boat). The F-22 needs the simplicity of clean lines.

Colour paint test + painting to help fairing

209-at last able to check new air pressure equipment, and make a sample piece for the supplier.

210- a float is also partly painted with air spray gun, needs some more work.The paint seems ok.

212-experimental primer, made from white topcoat and burnt orange paint. Good result, its very strong.

213- yesterday, the 1st of September was a flag day in Estonia. It was a sunny day, first job was to put up the national flag.

214- main hull painted with topcoat, needs more putty, but at this stage it will be mostly included, not ground away. This helps to be able to see whats going on, then to add more putty carefully to get a good surface. Topcoat will protect the glassfibre laminate, of course.

Bought couple of divintcell lists to finish the cabin and cockpit plus more resin. Need to buy more carbon to finish the daggerboard and rudder, and plexiglass for the windows.

Main Hull in one piece !

The boat is not yet floating, but is finally in one piece!

For clarity it is Toivo who is doing all the hard work! He has just set up a new boatyard especially to build my F-22 in Estonia called Ormco Baltic. My original intention was to completely build the boat myself, but with too many other projects on the go (see the link to the Click-Raft) it just wasn't possible - so how to realise the dream? A good mini-transat sailor friend of mine Jaanus Tamme highly recommended Toivo to build the boat... and as you can see he is doing an excellent job.

Toivo and I have been researching other sites for tips at this stage, esp Jay's and Menno's.
re making the bow eye and centerboard case pieces. Thought ours was rather messy, so went back through Menno's archive to see how he dealt with it (his blog is so thorough to find these kinds of details) - and i found this !
"Laminating the bobstay anchor wasn't a big succes. Laminating ('wrapping') pieces this small is still not my cup of tea. To continue moaning: the fit in the hull wasn't very good either. But it's no use crying over spilled milk. Currently the final layer of C is curing so tomorrow I'll glue the anchor in place and be done with it. I decided to try use vacuum to force the last layer of cloth tight around the piece. I used an ordinary shopping-bag and a tie-wrap. This works really well."

he also has some very good advice for how to join the two halves of the hull together - its a great technique...have a look at Vrijdag 9 November 2007..

also interesting is his photos re the placing of the centreboard (same design option ie rotating off-centre) and shows the rollers already built in for the control lines.

183- a slot is cut for the centreboard into the boat hull!

185-at last all the corners and edges are glued over and after cutting I can fit the centerboard case in the boat.

Todays nice surprise was, that Jaanus made a phonecall.He is somewhere in Portugal and plans to sail to Mediterranean. He will be home around end of August.

Money can be a problem, it is like having nails, but not a hammer, having a screwdriver, but not screws...

Chainblock is installed and ready for lifting the half hull. May be we need another one, it will be clear very soon. The mast step is ready. Its made of 4mm stainless steel plate and welded together. When I asked the local metal workers, even my old fellows, to make it in aluminium, they were not happy. The suitable aluminium is specific and sold in big quantities. When I asked to do it in SST, it worked well.The weight is 1580gramms. I hope it works well and is not too heavy.

A couple of new pictures, showing bulkheads. Also deck equipment components arrived. As usual, some of ordered parts are missing. Now exploring Buzz Ballenger in the US to supply the mast.
We are also learning alot from Ian regarding the secrets of how to save weight on construction. More on this shortly - as Toivo put it, its more like aeroplane construction than boat construction.

No information from Johnmast in Denmark. I got a advice to ask Z-spar(France). .... Suggestions anyone ???

Main Hull begins Construction

included photo of todays situation. The half must be laminated in three steps.

meanwhile the twins (floats) still need sanding and painting. The colour RAL 2002 (burnt orange) see samples below which are different, there are the 10% and 5% samples and painted one and two layers. The 10% covering properties must be better, but the 5% is more pleasant to work.

Have just heard from my estonian Mini-Transat friend Jaanus Tamme, that he's about to begin his 1000 mile solo trip on Lendur (mad express- a fino designed Pogo2) sailing from france to estonia. (http://www.travellunch.ee/?setlang=eng) to qualify for the next mini - this will be great experience also as preparation for our joint trip to sail the F-22 from Tallinn to Groningen once she is finished !
That will be an amazing trip for both of us - and an early trial of what Ian Farrier's F-22 might really be capable of (ie mini-transat potential - fast, safe, reliable and potentially ocean going).

things moving on...

...On photos You can see todays situation. The "twins" are ready and assembled. Tomorrow I will make a nice radius between the hull and deck and glue over. Then we can see, what the weight is.And a painting job. I made some samples, my supplier asked to do. It seems the paint works well, a little weight economy is possible. This is not a common topcoat, some new polyester based paint.

And then the main hull, of course.

Problems are another kind- its hard to find suitable aluminium alloy list to cut mast support details,nobody is interested in small orders.Yesterday I was in steel manufacturing company, they make the ball...Swedish Selden is not interested in making a rotating mast. I hope to get an answer from Danish Johnmast thru my friends...and there is no serious mast manufacturer in Finland... any suggestions anyone ???

Floats

the floats are now coming together, having been joined and had the nose ends added, the interiors have been glassed, and now the exteriors ....

010- the float has just been glassed over, no air bubbles in this moment!

011- the hull needs more sanding.

0113 and 014- small details need attention and take lot of time.

polyester + epoxy

Polyester will not stick to epoxy, so must never be used to tape in or to
epoxy parts. Epoxy will stick to fully cured polyester, so epoxy must always be used to
tape epoxy components into a polyester hull. Polyester must be fully cured
however, and best way to ensure this is to peel ply polyester laminates to
exclude air. Unwaxed polyester resins will not cure fully when in contact
with air.

Not necessary - will only add extra weight - feeding the loads down further
into the bulkhead is all that is required.

Toivo has been very busy this week ... but still had enough time to enjoy the beautiful estonian sunsets of northern europe..... First float is assembled and a putty is on the joints. Tomorrow I will put together another float, then decks and so on...

Realisation of a Dream has begun

Finally after two years of dreaming, ordering the plans from Ian Farrier and slowly working out how best to realise my F-22, construction has begun.
This has been a real struggle as resources have been very tight, also I originally began thinking with another friend to build together two F-22's but those plans fell through. My own time has been very limited with way too much to deal with at work, plus another project to build a mini-prototype building system, the click-raft (link included on this blog).

So after many long conversations with my old Estonian friend Jaanus Tamme (Mini-Transat sailor) he introduced me to his friend Toivo Kylvet, a professional boat builder from Estonia.
We emailed back and forth to agree how best to do this, and finally I flew to meet Toivo and his wife in Tallinn a few weeks back to agree a contract and to give him Ian's very thorough set of drawings....
This is a very exciting moment for both of us for Toivo has also taken a big step towards his own dream of establishing his own boat building yard. His new company Ormco Baltic OU is based at his farm not far from Estonia's capital city of Tallinn.

There is a strong spirit of adventure and excitement between us in the realisation of this joint dream, and I hope to be able to make this F-22 something really exceptional - so that it can also be really good to help kick start Toivo's boat yard and establish his name.

...and now the materials have been ordered....
.... the hardback has been built, and form frames set up ...
.. and the floats have begun construction...
.. internal fiberglass skin, and internal bulkheads taped and fixed...
